Training starts with the study of Budo Taijutsu (Unarmed combat methods of the samurai) which employs strikes, kicks, joint
locks and throws.
Gradually you are introduced to the use of various weapons including:
Bo (6ft Staff)
Hanbo (3ft stick)
Ken (Sword)
Yari (Spear)
Naginata (Glaive)
Kusari Fundo (Chain)
Shuriken (Throwing
Blades)
Kakushi Buki (Hidden Weapons),
etc.
Training in the Bujinkan incorporates nine traditional
schools which include such arts as Koshi-jutsu, Koppo-jutsu, Ninpo Taijutsu, Daken-taijutsu and Jutai-jutsu.
Each
three months we decide on a theme and provide detailed instruction on the contents of these teachings.
The main
characteristics of what we do include:
- The use of timing, distance and whole body movement to control the opponent.
- Not using any strength and keeping a relaxed body.
- Turning off our intention (Ishiki) so the opponent is taken
by the technique without realizing what is happening.
Training is not just useful in everyday life as a form of
self-defense but helps cultivate a relaxed and flexible state of mind.
